THE CHALLENGE:
The medical affairs division of a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company was experiencing significant challenges at the leadership team level. The team leader recognized the dysfunctional dynamics on the team, which had splintered into sub-factions that were pulling the team apart rather than pulling it together.

OUR SOLUTION:
We assessed the team with confidential interviews and a diagnostic survey that provided a robust set of insights from which to design a program for its development. We kicked off with a one-day workshop to reveal the team to itself. This “hard look in the mirror” allowed the team to align on its strengths and the areas where it needed to improve. We coached the team to select a few areas to focus on, beginning with the foundational topic of ‘Trust.’ The team left the kick-off workshop with a clear set of action items and agreements on how they should operate going forward.

Subsequent workshops allowed the team to check in on those action items and agreements and to modify them in the light of changing business circumstances. We incorporated teaming skills into the workshops to raise the team’s capabilities and to address its specific challenges. The team committed to full day workshops every quarter for 15 months, at which point we re-assessed.

RESULTS:
The team saw a 43% increase in the 14 key factors (such as ‘Trust’, ‘Decision Making’, and ‘Accountability’) that underpin team effectiveness.
